Sen. Jesse Lujan has introduced a resolution expressing solidarity with Jewish communities around the world and showing support for Israel, following an unprecedented airstrike by Hamas, a Palestinian militant group in Gaza, killing 1,400 Israelis.

"We need to put it on the record that the 37th Guam Legislature strongly opposes these horrific acts of evil," Lujan said.

"We believe in protecting human rights, promoting peace, and advocating on behalf of the vulnerable and defenseless. No man, woman, or child should ever have to suffer and endure the barbarity we're seeing being done to the Israelis at the hands of Hamas," he added.

As the death toll rose to 3,000, Israel is gearing up for the next stage of its war on Hamas, massing troops and military equipment on its border with the Hamas-controlled enclave.

"It's just awful. The videos and images we're seeing are appalling and downright evil. I'm grateful for my colleagues standing with me in support of this resolution, we cannot stay silent on this issue,” Lujan said.

Resolution 223-37 is co-sponsored by Sens. Telo T. Taitague, Thomas J. Fisher, Christopher M. Dueñas, Dwayne T.D. San Nicolas, Frank Blas, Jr., Roy A.B. Quinata, Joanne Brown and Joe S. San Agustin.

"Staying silent is like agreeing with the perpetrators. We need to condemn these atrocities and stand with the rest of the world to put a stop to this. If we don't, the consequences will be significant," Lujan said. "We have to remember, as a U.S. territory and developed Western civilization, we are not excluded from their hate."

Last week, Rep. Uifa’atali Amata Radewagen, American Samoa's delegate to the U.S. Congress, issued a statement condemning the attacks on Israel.

"The people of Israel are enduring sudden brutal attacks, loss of life, and destruction. We must stand together in fully condemning this lawless violence, and insisting internationally that Hamas stops this attack without delay," said Radewagen, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

"The people of Israel should not have to face the threat of rockets, explosions and indiscriminate killing. The State of Israel is a dependable friend to the United States, and an allied democracy in an important region of the world," she said.

"Our prayers and thoughts, as well as our nation’s diplomatic efforts and strong support, are with the people of Israel in this time," Radewagen added.
