Suva--I am writing to express my deep concern about the alarming increase in drug use across our beautiful Fiji.
As a student at the University of The South Pacific, I have witnessed firsthand the devastating effects this growing problem has on our communities, especially
among our youth.
Recent reports indicate an increase in the availability and consumption of illegal substances, most recently, police have been confiscating more and more drug on nationwide drug raids.
This raises the question as to where a small nation like Fiji is getting the supply of all these drugs and substances. How do we counter this?
Our government and law enforcement agencies must take urgent action to address this issue. We need stricter border controls to prevent drug trafficking,
more resources for rehabilitation centers, and improved education programs
in schools to raise awareness about the dangers of drug use.
Furthermore, we must address the root causes that lead people to turn to drugs, such as unemployment, poverty and lack of opportunities.
Community support systems and youth engagement programs could
play a crucial role in preventing drug abuse.
I urge all Fijians to unite against this menace. We must work together to protect our families, preserve our culture, and secure a brighter future for Fiji.
