Sen. William A. Parkinson has expressed his support for the Guam Power Authority’s application for a feasibility study aimed at expanding its SMART grid infrastructure to incorporate broadband access and assess the potential for establishing data centers on Guam.

In a letter to Andrew Berke, administrator of the Rural Utilities Service under the USDA Rural Development, Parkinson emphasized the need for this initiative, which aligns with Guam’s strategic objectives of enhancing infrastructure and fostering economic development.

“As a member of the 37th Guam Legislature and the oversight committee responsible for our island’s power utilities, I recognize the vital importance of advancing both our energy and digital infrastructures to support the economic growth of our communities,” Parkinson stated in his letter.

GPA's SMART grid is a modernized electrical grid system designed to improve the reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of power distribution across the island, allowing for real-time monitoring and management of energy use, which helps reduce power outages, lowers energy consumption and enables consumers to have more control over their energy bills.

The integration of broadband into this grid enhances not only energy management but also potentially expanding digital access for Guam’s residents.

The proposed feasibility study will explore the integration of broadband access into the existing SMART grid, a move that promises to boost the efficiency and reliability of Guam’s power distribution system while addressing the pressing need for expanded high-speed internet access across the island.

Additionally, the study will evaluate the infrastructure and equipment necessary for developing data centers on Guam, which could position the territory as a regional hub for data management and technology services.

“Establishing local data centers would enhance Guam’s digital infrastructure, attract potential investments, create high-quality jobs, and stimulate economic growth,” Parkinson added. “This initiative could secure our territory’s future success by capitalizing on our strategic location and existing infrastructure.” (Legislature)
