Chicago, Illinois — The Democratic National Committee adopted its 2024 platform, underscoring the strategic significance of Guam and the CNMI in the broader context of U.S. national security and economic development.
This platform highlights the historic investments made by President Biden and Vice President Harris in Guam, solidifying its position as a key player in the Pacific and a critical partner in the nation’s defense strategy.
In her remarks before the Alaska delegation on Wednesday, Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero emphasized the vital role that Guam plays in the U.S. defense chain, stating, “Guam is not just an island; we are the westernmost point of the United States, standing on the front lines of national security. Our strength and resilience are vital to the protection and prosperity of our nation.”
The DNC platform further reinforces this by recognizing the need for substantial federal investments in territories like Guam and the CNMI.
Specifically, the platform supports the construction of a state-of-the-art medical complex on Guam, which will co-locate health agencies on a single campus to create a more integrated healthcare system. This initiative is crucial for enhancing healthcare services for both the civilian population and military personnel stationed in the region.
The governor also highlighted her strategic framework of priority concerns that she has actively presented to the Biden administration, the Department of Defense, and members of Congress.
This strategic framework of priority concerns includes critical infrastructure for the port, power, water, wastewater, funding for public safety, education, and roads—all of which are critically tied to national security interests.
Leon Guerrero stressed the importance of local and national collaboration in bringing these developments to life, emphasizing, “Our security is America’s security. The investments we secure today are investments in the future stability and safety of the entire Pacific region.”
“We may be small in size, but our contribution to the nation is vast. Every partnership we forge and every dollar we secure strengthens our position as an indispensable ally in the Pacific," she added.
In closing, the governor called on the people of Guam and their networks throughout the United States to engage actively in the upcoming national and local elections.
“This general election is not just about choosing leaders; it’s about choosing the future we want for our island and our country. Every vote is a vote for democracy, for freedom, and for the continued progress of Guam and the United States," she said.
“Our voices must count in the halls of Congress, and their impact will only be felt by connecting the dots for national leaders to understand that Guam plays a critical role in defending our nation—now more than ever with the current geopolitical tensions.
"The inclusion of our story in the DNC platform is proof that Guam’s DNC delegates and Vice Chair Rikki Orsini who served as Guam’s platform committee member are effectively making that case for the people of Guam. I am proud of Team Guam and our delegate-nominee Ginger Cruz, who is already working tirelessly to fight for what is rightfully due to the people of Guam. Together, we can ensure that this impact translates into real change for our communities.”
