The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the Guam Power Authority to participate in the inaugural Utility and Grid Operator Technical Assistance program.
As one of only seven applicants chosen nationwide, GPA will gain access to expertise and resources necessary to develop reliable, resilient and secure grids to meet the nation's increasing energy demands.
"Being chosen for this groundbreaking program underscores GPA's
commitment to advancing our island's energy infrastructure," said John Benavente, GPA general manager. "This collaboration will enhance our efforts to deliver more affordable, equitable, and reliable electricity to the people of Guam."
The Utility and Grid Operator Technical Assistance program is managed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, with support from Idaho National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. GPA will benefit from these institutions' technical
expertise and best practices to enhance grid modernization and renewable energy integration.
GPA's participation in this program aligns with its ongoing initiatives to modernize Guam's power grid and transition to renewable energy sources.
Recent efforts include the Guam 100 initiative, which received a $3 million award from the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs to analyze pathways to 100 percent renewable energy for Guam.
Additionally, GPA was awarded $1 million by the DOE's Office of Electricity to enhance grid reliability and resilience through advanced data analytics.
"To be among only seven selected utilities nationwide is a testament to the progress we've made and our dedication to creating a sustainable energy future for Guam," added Benavente. "We look forward to leveraging this opportunity to strengthen further Guam's energy infrastructure for the benefit of our community."
