Tonoas, Chuuk — The Federated States of Micronesia has launched the Smart Island Digital Hub in Tonoas, Chuuk, providing residents with access to high-speed internet.
“This Smart Island initiative is a symbol of what’s possible when technology, community, and partnership come together,” FSM President Wesley W. Simina said during the launch on April 8. “It’s a cornerstone of our vision for a more connected, more unified Micronesia,”
The FSM government said the landmark initiative will pave the way for digital literacy training and a suite of e-services aimed at enhancing education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
Officials said the project signifies a major advancement in the government’s efforts to bring digital transformation to Tonoas, an island in the Chuuk lagoon with an area of 8.8 km and a population of 3,600.
This initiative is a collaboration among the FSM national government, the Chuuk state government, Tonoas municipal government and development partners, including the United Nations and the International Telecommunication Union.
“These bodies serve as central hubs for aligning efforts across sectors and with international partners, ensuring that all digital initiatives contribute to a resilient, inclusive and digitally empowered Micronesia,” the FSM government said in a press release.
