The Guam Housing Corp. and the Department of Education have entered into a memorandum of understanding to provide a temporary solution to the Simon Sanchez High School problem.
Under the agreement, GHC would lease land to DOE to build a temporary school facility for Simon Sanchez High School.
Key highlights of the MOU would include the following:
· Allocation of 15 acres of GHC land for the temporary school facility, with the potential for DOE infrastructure development to offset potential rental costs. GHC will maintain the utilization of the infrastructure to create affordable rental units.
· Assurance of durable modular units, strategically designed for both functionality and longevity, to accommodate the educational needs of the students.
· A clear timeline of the building of SSHS to ensure accountability and avoid prolonged occupation of the temporary site.
· Provisions for environmental assessments and infrastructure integration, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding area and leveraging existing resources efficiently.
“The main idea is simple- bring our kids home. Bring them back to Yigo,” said Sen. Jose San Agustin, chair of the appropriations committee.
San Agustin stressed the significance of this partnership in addressing the pressing need for educational infrastructure. He acknowledges the dedication of all involved parties and expresses gratitude for their unwavering commitment to the well-being of Guam's students.
Sen. Roy Quinata expressed optimism about the proposed solution.
“This journey to rebuilding Sanchez High School has been long and arduous. Even in the interim, we are working toward the needs of all our students, including those affected by double sessions," said Quinata, chair of the Simon Sanchez High School Committee.
