University of Guam hustles for high school grads

Sign up for next fall, get $1K credit for tuition, textbooks

The University of Guam will be offering $1,000 in credit to new high school graduates enrolling in the Fanuchånan 2018 (Fall) semester. The Fine’nana! Program grants $500 in tuition credit and $500 towards textbooks to current high school seniors who apply for admission before March 30, 2018.

UOG President Robert Underwood recently met with administrators and representatives from each of the public high schools to discuss Fine’nana! and to begin a partnership to address a slight decrease in enrollment from public schools over the past few semesters.

To sign up for Fine’nana!, current high school seniors must apply for admission and fill out the out the Free Application For Federal Student Aid form. UOG will then provide a conditional acceptance letter prior to the student’s graduation.

Over the next few weeks, UOG admissions counselors will be visiting each public high school to assist students in filling out the applications and other paperwork. The deadline to apply is March 30, 2018.

“I want to thank GDOE and the principals for working with UOG to increase opportunities and attendance,” said Underwood.

The University plans to also meet with private school administrators to offer the program their students.

In the meeting, Underwood referenced a study by Georgetown University which projects that of all available jobs in the year 2020, 65 percent will require a college degree or some college experience.

“The importance of a college education cannot be overstated,” said Underwood. “We believe that college provides our high school graduates with their best chance for success, whether that means gainful employment, a career trajectory, or even quality of life.”
